Artistic Practice

Tina Winkhaus is a Berlin-based artist working at the intersection of photography and digital image construction. Drawing on an extensive archive of her own photographs, she builds complex pictorial worlds in which individual figures, animals, objects and environments are photographed separately and brought together through a highly detailed process of digital composition.

Winkhaus describes this method as “Analog AI”: the resulting images may possess the seamlessness associated with artificially generated imagery, while every visual element originates in her own photographic material and every compositional decision remains artist-led. Her practice explores cultural memory, identity, social roles, beauty, nature and the shifting meanings attached to familiar images and symbols.
