Artistic Practice
Tina Winkhaus creates photographic tableaux distinguished by painterly depth and psychological tension. Her visual worlds combine art-historical references with contemporary motifs, bringing together beauty, social self-presentation, memory and transience in precisely composed scenes.
Her works are constructed from numerous elements that she photographs herself. In an elaborate digital process, Winkhaus edits and combines this material to create complex spaces with their own distinctive lighting and sense of reality. Every visual decision remains under the artist’s control; generative artificial intelligence is not used in the creation of the works.
With the term “Analogue AI”, Winkhaus describes the multilayered human process of thought and creation behind her art. Experience, memory, intuition and her extensive photographic archive converge within this process.
Recurring themes in her work include desire and loss, social roles, ideals of beauty and the relationship between humanity, nature and cultural memory. A deep black reminiscent of European painting, dramatic lighting and an occasional dark humour shape her unmistakable visual language.

In her solo exhibition HM4T 4 EVR, Tina Winkhaus explores the images and memories from which ideas of home and belonging take shape. Football, forests, deer, hunting, allotment gardens and pigeons appear as familiar motifs drawn from German cultural and everyday history. Winkhaus approaches them from a personal perspective while opening a space for individual memories and different experiences of belonging.
