Marie Louise Elshout’s painting Hybrid #14 (Jackalopes) was selected for the Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender 2026. On July 24, 2026, the work is presented as the calendar’s artwork of the day.
The Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender is an annually published and nationally distributed Dutch art publication. Each calendar page introduces a different work from the fields of fine art, photography, illustration, fashion, design, architecture or graphic design. The publication brings together established artistic positions and emerging talent, offering a broad audience a new encounter with contemporary art every day.
The works are selected annually by a changing team of art experts. The inclusion of Hybrid #14 (Jackalopes) therefore represents not only a publication but also a significant form of external recognition for Marie Louise Elshout’s artistic position.
Published by Rotterdam based Trichis Publishing, the full colour calendar weighs almost three kilograms and is distributed through the Dutch and Belgian book trade.
In Hybrid #14 (Jackalopes), Marie Louise Elshout draws on a figure from North American folklore. Arranged symmetrically, the two horned, hare-like creatures resemble the protagonists of a ceremonial historical double portrait. Their garments and direct gazes lend them dignity and presence, while their hare ears and antlers resist any clear distinction between human and animal.
The original painting featured in the Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender is currently on view in the group exhibition The Space Between at janinebeangallery in Berlin.
