Fotograf Carsten Schulz sprach Dienstag, den 26. August im Radio eins Studio im Bikini Berlin mit Knut Elstermann über seine Serie LOCKDOWNBEATS als „stilles Archiv der Clubkultur“.
Seine Aufnahmen zeigen leere Berliner Clubs während der Pandemie, ergänzt durch reduzierte Schwarz-Weiß-Porträts prägender Resident-DJs.
Im Zentrum steht nicht die Nostalgie, sondern die kulturelle Fragilität: Was bleibt, wenn der Sound verstummt und was sagt die Stille über eine Stadt aus, deren Identität von Nachtleben und Freiräumen geprägt war?
Schulz betont die formale Klarheit, die dokumentarische Verantwortung und die persönliche Dimension der Porträtierten. Zugleich machte er im Interview deutlich, dass die Clubs nicht nur damals unter Druck standen, durch Immobilienmarkt, veränderte Ausgehgewohnheiten und kulturelle Erosion, sondern auch heute. Der Lockdown habe viele der aktuellen Probleme und Schließungen mitbegründet und die Verwundbarkeit der Szene offengelegt, selbst dort, wo Räume und Gemeinschaften eigentlich Potenzial für eine Rückkehr von Musik und Menschen in sich tragen. #radioeins #knutelstermann #bikiniberlin #berlin

Mit der Ausstellung „LOCKDOWNBEATS“ von Carsten Schulz zeigt die janinebeangallery ein visuelles Archiv des Verschwindens: Berliner Clubs als stille Räume, DJs als Porträtierte ohne Publikum, fragile Dokumente eines kulturellen Ökosystems.

Die Ausstellung entfaltet ein visuelles Koordinatensystem zwischen Traum und Fragment, Erinnerung und Gegenwart. Sie war zugleich eine der besonderen Sommerausstellungen der Galerie mit einem unvergesslichen „Kunstessen“ vor zwei Wochen.

Mit der Ausstellung „Lockdownbeats“ zeigt Fotograf Carsten Schulz eine eindringliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Clubszene als kulturellem Resonanzraum.
„Lockdownbeats“ ist visuelles Archiv, Hommage und ein sensibles Erinnern an das, was für die Berliner Clubkultur auf dem Spiel steht. @the_photoproducer @strawberry.berlin

Die Fotografien von Carsten Schulz halten fest, was wir gerade live erleben: Clubs, die einst für Freiheit, Gemeinschaft und künstlerisches Experiment standen, kämpfen ums Überleben. Jüngstes Beispiel: das queere SchwuZ, Ikone der Berliner Clubszene und Porträtmotiv in „Lockdownbeats“, hat Insolvenz angemeldet. Trotz fast 50 Jahren Geschichte bleibt die Zukunft ungewiss.

Fitz Braum, Gründungsgeschäftsführer von four music productions, beschreibt im Vorwort zum bald erscheinenden Buch von Carsten Schulz („Lockdownbeats“ finebooks Verlag, September 2025) diese Entwicklung als doppelte Zäsur: Die Pandemie brachte eine weltweite Pause – und was blieb, war eine fragile Kulturlandschaft. Sinkende Besucherzahlen, steigende Kosten und fehlende Unterstützung bereiten vielen Spielstätten existenzielle Probleme.

Heute in der Berliner Morgenpost:

Die Ausstellung „Echoes & Constructs“ wird zur Bühne für vier künstlerische Auseinandersetzungen mit Erinnerung, Geschichte und visueller Wahrnehmung.

Wir zeigen hier vier Zitate aus dem Artikel und laden euch ein, die Werke selbst zu erleben.

Armando Mariño: „Das Bild eines weißen Kindes, das sich angstvoll die Ohren zuhält, flankiert von zwei afrikanischen Masken, Mariño konfrontiert die westliche Welt mit der verdrängten Geschichte des Kolonialismus.“

Jose Girl: „In den Fotografien von Jose Girl verschwimmen Licht und Traum sie wirken wie malerische Visionen im Halbdunkel des Unterbewussten.“

MASCH: „MASCH greift urbane Struktur und digitale Unruhe auf seine Bilder wirken wie flackernde Erinnerungsfragmente aus der Gegenwart.“

“That fragile epiphany, when you sense the potential of an image that hasn’t yet arrived, is extraordinary. The possibility that it could go wrong, disappear, or evolve into something unexpected, this is what makes painting magical.”

For Cuban artist Armando Mariño, painting exists in a space between possibility and loss of control. His works, currently on view in our group exhibition Echoes & Constructs, combine Cuban intensity with visual precision, narrating stories of upheaval, reinterpretation, and resilience.

The exhibition also features works by Jose Girl, MASCH, and Juan Miguel Pozo.

Echoes & Constructs brings together four artistic positions that address the relationship between image and reality, memory and the present, construction and fragment.

Juan Miguel Pozo, born in 1967 in Holguín, Cuba, came to Europe in 1994. His work engages with socialist aesthetics, architecture, and historical memory.

He paints architectural fragments – floating staircases, isolated façades, and urban relics – that evoke vanished futures and ideological residues. His compositions connect dystopia and utopia, Eastern modernism and the Caribbean, Berlin and Havana.

Pozo’s works are part of major collections including PAMM Miami, the Falckenberg Collection and the Ludwig Collection.

The group exhibition Echoes & Constructs brings together four artistic positions that address the relationship between image and reality, memory and the present, construction and fragment.

Cuban artist Armando Mariño, born in 1968 in Santiago de Cuba, now lives and works in the USA, exhibiting internationally. After training in Santiago and Havana, he studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. His artistic development reflects a multi-layered cultural environment and social conflicts.

Mariño uses painting as an arena of cultural and political friction. His technique alternates between impasto brushstrokes, layered surfaces and targeted fragmentation. He refers to iconography from art history, media and political symbolism—not as quotation, but as deconstruction. His pictures are visual confrontations, ambivalent and resistant, seductive and uncomfortable in their power of color. @armando_marino_artist

The typewriter artworks of Peter Doherty are sequences and little windows giving insight into his mind and examination of the world. This is not only perceptible by reading the texts but also in the pieces of paper they are written on, giving evidence in many ways of the moment and place they were created in. The varying types of paper from different locations and cultures, its aged and fragmental condition, little added illustrations and imprints, notes with pen and pencil, - these features are all synchronized with the text. Circumstances have resulted in the texts as they have worked on the paper. As such these typewritten texts are much more than containers of textual content, they synaesthetically merge into the visual creations they are written on. #peterdoherty #janinebeangallery #berlin #typewriter #art
