Over several decades, MASCH has developed a distinctive visual language that combines narrative lightness, subtle humour and a reduced formal vocabulary. His figures and geometric elements evoke both archaic imagery and the clarity of modern graphic systems.
The small-scale drawings on paper occupy a special place within his oeuvre. With remarkable precision and economy of means, MASCH creates compositions that oscillate between figuration, memory and imagination. It is precisely their concentration and immediacy that lend these works a striking presence.
In their intimacy, the drawings belong to a long tradition of collecting and of the autonomous work on paper. Their openness and lightness invite a slower and more attentive way of looking, demonstrating that even modest formats can possess an extraordinary pictorial power.
MASCH (*1950) lives and works in Berlin. His works are held in collections throughout Europe, the United States and Taiwan. Alongside his practice as a painter, he worked for many years as an art painter on international film productions, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, whose production design received the Academy Award in 2015.

Born in the Rhineland in 1950, MASCH studied painting at the Berlin University of the Arts in the 1970s and has exhibited internationally for many years. Alongside his artistic practice, he has worked as an art painter for film productions and contributed to projects associated with the Academy Award-winning film The Grand Budapest Hotel.
His works combine a clear visual language with a playful sense of freedom. Figures, symbols and objects merge into colourful compositions that recall both the formal reduction of Cubism and the immediacy of drawing. Despite their clarity, the works remain open and inviting, bringing together humour, humanity and a distinctive poetic quality.
Works on paper have occupied a special place in the history of collecting for centuries. Their immediacy and concentration encourage a slower and more attentive way of looking. Smaller formats often possess a remarkable presence and can provide an ideal entry point into collecting contemporary art.
