Schmit <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">uses <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">multilayered cardboard <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">as a carrier for his oil colours, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">cutting it open at <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">specific spots and mounting a fluorescent tube across a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">bove<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> it. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">His motifs are <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">r<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ather<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> un-idyllic realms, chaotic vegetation and rampant, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">perilous weather prevail. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">This atmosphere is created and supported by his deconstructive <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">since ablating wipe technique which <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">repeatedly <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">skews <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">and crosses <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">shapes and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">layers of paint. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">The mentioned mounted fluorescent tube<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> on some of his works contrast <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">strongly, encumbering the painted landscape w<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ith<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> an epitome of industry and civilisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">Animals only own the fore<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ground in the paintings for the exhibition by <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"><b>Martin Stommel<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">. The fluent shapes of animal bodies are dynamically interwoven with o<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ne another and a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">n organic background. The animals are densely graduated <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">into the pictorial space,<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">their outlines are partially merged, still the painter a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ccomplishes<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> to express and emphasize the bodies and their movements by a reduced and concentrated application of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">colour.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> The works \u201eDay 6\u201c and \u201eDer kleine Garten\u201c (\u201e<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"><i>The Little Garden<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">\u201c) <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">are derived<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">from biblical t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">hemes,<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">namely <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">Genesis and paradise. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">Different to its classic models though, Stommel provides no depiction of the creator himself in humanoid guise. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">The animals<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">\u2015<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">in the case of \u201eDer kleine Garten\u201c extincted ones only<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">\u2015<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">tick with their kind<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">are the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">self-sufficient splendour of the artworks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">In the paintings <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">for the exhibition by<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"><b>Anna Borowy<\/b><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">animals are also the sole protagonists and get along without humans. Their expression and stance of her creatures however<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">feature astonishing and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">familiar human traits, emphasizing the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">soulfulness of Borowy\u2018s fauna. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">Her graceful creatures <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">appear as moved by emotions, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">their condition <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">is both physically and<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">piritually<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> precarious. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">he painter <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">however <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">di<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">n\u2018t set <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">animals <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">as mere placeholder<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">for<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> human characters <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">but <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">depicted them as b<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">eings<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> of intrinsic value, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">respectively as <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">animistic <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">complements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">The collages of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"><b>Kathrin G\u00fcnter<\/b><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">have <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">in terms of content <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">addressed diverse agents of environmentalism. For these \u201eportraits\u201c of persons like Leonardo Di Caprio, Greta Thunberg or Jason Momoa t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">he artist<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> employed digital pieces of images from their Instagram accounts and combined these with pictorial elements of animals t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> a new fabric. The result<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> are hybrid avatars of humans and animals outfitted with the symbols and gesture of their ecological commitment and positioned in front of a t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">hreatening<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> background of forces of nature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">Kathrin G\u00fcnter also reflects the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">potency of self-expression and the cult of personality as a c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ommon<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> projection in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">social media. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">In this context in particular G\u00fcnter has <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">compiled a book with thousands of printed comments taken from the Instagram account of Greta Thunberg. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">Especially the reactions on her person <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">illustrate the Janus-faced character and the abysses of social media: on the one <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">hand in their capacity as very potent amplifiers <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">and transmitters of a movement, on the other hand <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">as a reservoir of human malice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">With his two photographies <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"><b>Dominik Butzmann<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> juxtaposes in the exhibition the portraits of two salient figures of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">environmental activism. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">The image in horizontal format with the title \u201eHow Dare You?\u201c depicts the Swedish <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">eco-activist Greta Thunberg, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">who <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">here <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">fixates the viewer <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">sternly and according to the title.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">The second work <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">titled \u201eHow Dare I?\u201c <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">shows the last <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">E<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">nvironment <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">S<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ecretary <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">of the G<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">erman Democratic Republic<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> Michael Succow with <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">a serious but also lenient expression. Bes<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ides many other commitments for environmental protection<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">Michael Succow has <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">taken care of the resolution of the so-called National Park Agenda<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">in the very last of the Council of Ministers of the GDR in 1990, thanks to which seven percent of the whole area of the former GDR have been transformed into nature reserves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">hough both protagonists <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">portrayed <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">by Dominik Butzmann categorically <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">have commit<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ed themselves <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">to the same <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">cause<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">\u2015<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">the protection of the environment<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">\u2015in terms of attitude and method they seem to approach their common aim <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">from contrary positions. What <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">is perceivable in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">the differences <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">of<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> the biographies of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">the two characters<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">, their policies, their age<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">, respectively their generations, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">their cultural backgrounds, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">can also be subtly read <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">from<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> the black and white portraits by Dominik Butzmann.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">Though the s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">ubjects<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\"> of the paintings of the exhibition <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">are entirely and independently effective, the lack of depictions of humans <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">is striking, albeit the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">traces and implications of human influence are manifest. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">The artworks <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">realise the beauty and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">vulnerability of nature <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">as well as empathy with the creature. style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">on the one side <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">on the other <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">are<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">celebrities<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;\">accompanied by animal avatars <\/span><span style=\"font-family:
